RÅ
What happens when a polket from Östra Värmland in Sweden meets the groove of house music? Or when a polska from Västerbotten unites with the dirty harmonies of hard rock?
You will get the answer when the first act of the evening, RÅ, takes the stage. RÅ is a Swedish/Danish trio consisting of Christine Tilby on violin, Anna Frykstam on clarinet and Cecilia Moore on saxophone. Together, the trio puts Swedish folk music into untried contexts through exuberant and maximalist interpretations. RÅ lets folk music unfold freely and plays it like you've never heard it before!
VÍÍK
VÍÍK is a Scandinavian sextet from Norway and Denmark. With the Norwegian singer and composer Elisabeth Vik at the front, the group moves around in a genre field between hypnotizing Nordic melodies, the groove of rock, and the raw and elegant aesthetics of jazz.
Together, the six band members lead the audience into an enchanting universe of mysterious medieval ballads and fairy tales in an attempt to explore the hybrids within folk music. VÍÍK is well-played, expressive music which you definitely won’t forget!

Growing Roots: The youth and cultural heritage
What is Danish and Scandinavian folk culture? How do we as young people relate to our own Danish cultural heritage? How does this fit into a globalized society, and what significance does folk culture have for our identity formation at a time when ‘Danish-ness’ is being politicized?
These questions are explored when Aarhus Folk Festival gives the microphone to the young generation of folk musicians from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. We invite you to talks, dialogue and music and to dive into the cultural heritage with ‘Rigsspillemand’ poul Lendal, singer and composer Elisabeth Vil (VÍÍK) and the Danish-Swedish trio RÅ. Between the various talks, you will experience small showcase concerts with some of Denmark's newest folk talents.
The day ends with the panel discussion 'Is cultural heritage political?' where it is possible to ask questions to all participating musicians and presenters. If you haven't had enough yet, we'll host a tasting and a workshop in drinking and toasting songs at Pica Pica afterwards and warm up to the evening concerts with RÅ and VÍÍK
