Suaré Virginie Dembele: Talk & Mini Concert on Mali's Massive Influence on Western Music Production
For a couple of hours, we’ll turn our attention to Mali, a country with a world-renowned music culture. Over the years, many acclaimed artists have emerged from Mali, and during this talk, Suaré Virginie Dembele, Moussa Diallo, and Mikas Bøgh will share insights into Malian music culture, play musical examples, and explain why Mali has had such a significant impact on the global music scene. In a “tiny-desk” format, the talk and mini concert will be recorded and produced by Mones.
SPOT on Mali is also the name of a sister festival to the Aarhus-based one, taking place in Bamako, the capital of Mali. The festival highlights young talent from the local music scene and helps them reach audiences beyond Mali’s borders. Moussa Diallo has led the festival for 12 years in close collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, which has been managing various cultural programs in Mali since 2009.
PANELISTS:
Moussa Diallo is a bassist, singer, and festival director. Half Danish and half Malian, he played with many of the biggest stars in the 1980s and ’90s. He has also developed several children’s concepts that convey Mali’s musical and storytelling traditions.
Mikas Bøgh is a multi-instrumentalist with a deep love for and knowledge of Malian music. He founded the band Faratuben, featuring both Danish and Malian musicians, and released two albums. He is currently active with the project AKABANGA.
Suaré Virginie Dembele is currently on tour in Denmark and Sweden but resides in Mali.
This event is part of Roots&Hybrid 2025 and SPOT, and you’ll also have the chance to experience a full concert with Suaré Virginie Dembele at turkis during the festival.
