KAREN JUHL
With just a few releases, Karen Juhl has established herself as a distinctive voice in Danish music. Inspired by artists like Laurie Anderson, Solange, and M.I.A., Juhl’s work flows between art forms, created with equal parts love for experimental composition and pop songs.
Most recently, she released her debut album and book, Mother Tongue. The album is a sonic hybrid of R’n’B, rap, experimental composition, and folklore, taking listeners on a poetic, dissonant journey. The book, made in collaboration with graphic designer Paw Poulsen, combines the album’s lyrics with digital collages of internet images and handwritten notes. Through sound, text, and imagery, childhood scenes and digital realms intertwine, forming a fragmented yet meditative reflection on vulnerability in a hyper-globalized world.
Live, Juhl blends club culture with chamber music. Two musicians face each other on stage, creating moments of both intensity and deep focus. Beat fragments merge with MIDI harp improvisations in a complex and emotionally charged performance, most recently showcased at The Yard Theatre in London. Additionally, in the spring, she premiered the choral performance piece PARADE at the Glyptoteket museum.
