YOUMNA SABA
Youmna Saba, born in Beirut in 1984, is a versatile musician and composer. With her enchanting vocals and soulful poetry, Saba accompanies the oud, which is equipped with a unique digital extension she developed as part of her research work. This addition uses integrated synthesized electronics that amplify the subtle haptic vibrations on the oud's fingerboard and its hidden resonances, which often go unnoticed by the human ear.
This technique can be experienced in its full power on her latest album "Wishah" from 2023, where the piercing strings and creaking fingerboard merge in songs like "Ba'oud," while deep, subterranean tones rumble in "Al khayal," all underpinned by Saba's clear, present voice. The music is electroacoustic in its truest sense and appears as a symbiotic interplay between the synthetic and the deeply human.
Drawing inspiration from the long tradition of instrument-making, Saba brings a new approach that cybernetically tames the oud to explore new sonic possibilities. The oud speaks in the same way she does - it appears in her music as an ethereal figure with a wealth of urgent topics to explore, exuding an uncanny sense of agency and expression.
ROSYÁN
rosyán is the solo project of the Danish/Iranian composer, cellist and improviser Rosanna Lorenzen. With the cello in the leading role she explores the instrument and its possibilities, both acoustically and through electronic manipulation, which results into new unpredictable sound patterns that emerges, all from fragile passages to raw and massive – often combined with field recordings, both unpolished and processed.
In her sound she moves fluidly between atmospheric soundscapes and rhythmic structures, constantly balancing between improvisaton and predetermined form. She works and collaborates across genres, with other musicians and visual artsts. She has performed in diverse settings, ranging from sound wells in Frederiksberg, on a bass-vibrating floor, a dome in Berlin, sleep concerts and an audiovisual performance piece in an 18-meter tall oil tank in Sweden with 25 seconds of reverberation, to venues like the Cathedral of Copenhagen, SPOT Festival, SPOR Festival, and the Danish Radio Concert Hall.
