Join a Javanese Trance Ritual - a unique opportunity to enter the secret and mystical world of spirits. Led by the legendary REAK community Seni Reak Juarta Putra from the mountainous regions outside Bandung in West Java!
Learn about the techniques the group uses to enter trance, where they encounter mythical spirits and ancestors.
The workshop focuses on movement and dance, musically guided by the Seni Reak Juarta Putra community. There will be an introduction to the origins of the music, the instruments, and how the soundscape is used to possess, and perhaps free, the body from its physical surroundings into the spiritual realm.
The musical style is called Reak, one of the original trance rituals that has existed in Java for centuries. The spirit of the horse (Kuda Lumping) and ancestral spirits play a central role in this ceremony. In Java, it is performed for communal needs, with villagers gathering in the hundreds to be possessed and connect with spirits through music and dance. Reak, when people are possessed, is known for pushing participants to the extreme.
The musicians of Seni Reak Juarta Putra are a select group from the community. The music is played on skin drums (Dogdog) and a special leaf flute (Tarompet). There will be an exchange of instruments while the musicians perform the dances and begin to enter trance themselves. The audience is invited to be part of the ritual and fully participate.

The concert with Seni Reak Juarta Putra will take place on Friday, November 15, at Turkis. Participants of this workshop will get free access to the concert.
