Strong and warm Moroccan Gnawa music at turkis
Asmaa Hamzaoui isn't just the lead singer of the Moroccan band Asmaa Hamzaoui & Bnat Timbouktou. She is also a key character within Gnawa music where her challenging approach, warm vocals, and musical joy have made her the female ambassador for evangelistic desert rock worldwide.
Gnawa is a centuries-old Moroccan musical tradition, originating from the religious rituals of the Gnawa people. When the Gnawa people were held as slaves in Northwestern Africa, music was a means of survival. Of course, the dark period also marked the songs' narratives which often reflect the suffering and sacrifices of the people.
However, it is not the suffering, but the infectious passion and exuberant musicality of the four women that is at the center when Asmaa Hamzaoui & Bnat Timbouktou take the stage. Based on the spiritual aspects of Gnawa music, the group pays homage to the love of the spiritual world and the lives of the African people through dusty, bouncy rhythms and catchy melodies, and dancing.
Asmaa's songs does not only break new ground in music but also in speaking up for equal rights; the preservation of ancient traditions; and spiritual practices in modern-day Morocco and throughout the world.
It will be a heartwarming evening when Asmaa Hamzaoui & Bnat Timbouktou take over the turquoise house with their life-affirming music and energy.
