PERCUSSION WORKSHOP: RIGÓ X TIAGO CANDAL

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This intensive percussion ensemble workshop by Tiago Candal will focus on learning original arrangements of two traditional folk songs from the repertoire of RIGÓ choir: a Swedish polska and a Brazilian samba. The course will end in a joint concert with the choir at turkis, where the workshop participants will present their work.

While exploring the style of polska and samba, the chosen arrangements will have a mixed set of aesthetic languages, primarily based on Iberian, North African and South American rhythms. Participants will get the chance to try different instruments and be introduced to various techniques and styles. Through the learning of claves, the exploration of dynamics, and the use of rhythm cells as both exercises and building blocks, arrangements will be structured in pieces that will support the singing repertoire.

The main objective is to work as a group exploring the roles present in the ensemble and the counterpoint between the different parts that result in complex rhythmic patterns. Playing together and understanding how the instruments complement and support each other will be a central part of the workshop.

As the workshop is based on the interplay between different instruments and roles, participants of different levels will find challenges equal to their own level and interest.

Knowing how to read sheet music is not a requirement as all material will be taught by ear.

ABOUT TIAGO CANDAL

Tiago Candal is a Portuguese-Brazilian multi-instrumentalist, composer and sound technician based in Porto. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Production and Technology and a Master’s Degree in Composition. With several years of experience in playing, learning and teaching traditional music from different parts of the Globe, and over 15 years of experience in music pedagogy - ranging in a variety of contexts from music schools, workshops and mentoring Ethnos for over 6 years - he has a special fascination for cross-cultural exchanges.

He has been playing percussion from a young age in a classical context and later on has been studying traditional styles with teachers like Quiné Teles, Tiago Manuel Soares, António Serginho and Juan de La Fuente. He has been performing for 10 years with the Ethnic Percussion Ensemble of Porto.

➤ Saturday, May 24th from 9:00–15:00: Workshop
➤ Sunday, May 25th from 10:00–19:00: Workshop & dress rehearsal with RIGÓ
➤ Friday, May 30th from 16:00–21:00: Soundcheck and concert with RIGÓ at turkis

Participants without full availability for the course are very welcome to apply, but as we have a limited number of spots, those who can attend the whole duration of the program will have priority in the selection process.
