WHAT ARE FRAME DRUMS?
Among the earliest instruments in human history, frame drums are defined by a membrane diameter larger than the frame's depth. This category includes tambourines (jingled frame drums. Frame drums have been traditionally associated with folk, medieval and classical music, and rituals, being found in several contemporary music genres.
During the workshop, participants will learn about various types of frame drums from different cultures, with a primary focus on Bendir and Tar.
WORKSHOP CONTENT:
Modern Lap-Style (sitting) position for frame drums
Rhythmic vocalizations using Indian rhythmic languages (Konnakol & Solkattu)
Traditional Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and contemporary rhythms
Ornamentation and variation techniques for frame drums (basics)
Upright playing position (introduction)
Advanced techniques for Lap-Style
Group playing
Historical background of frame drums
Video recordings will be provided between classes, covering the essential topics from each lesson. Participants will also have access to materials from the 1st edition of the workshop.
WHO IS THE WORKSHOP FOR?
Anyone interested in developing rhythmic skills and/or learning percussion and frame drums, either you are already playing a melodic instrument or percussion instrument at any level, or who haven't yet learned any instrument at all.
Experienced percussionists or drummers looking to learn the basic techniques of modern frame drumming are also welcome.
Level: Beginner & Intermediate
REGISTRATION
Payment: It costs DKK 250 per month or DKK 1200 for full season.
Instrument rental: It’s possible to borrow an instrument (and take it home) for the duration of the commitment (25 kr. monthly fee). Limited amount of drums.

PEDRO CARAPINHA
Born in Portugal, based in Aarhus, he is a percussionist who has been performing and exploring world percussion for over a decade. He was introduced to the world of Frame drums in 2015, having expanded his music studies through travels, seminars, self-study and private classes with several acclaimed musicians. Among many, his work is highly influenced by the extensive work and innovative techniques of master percussionists such as Glen Velez and Zohar Fresco. Pedro is an independent musician, percussionist of Balkan Transit, and Her.Mano, member and performer of Ludico Theatre, collaborating regularly with other musicians.
