BANGA SPIRITS
For generations, the Banga tradition has been lived out in southern Tunisia, surrounded by the Sahara and dried-up salt lakes, among the descendants of slaves and society's most marginalized groups. Banga Spirits is one of the Banga family's sons: Yahya Chouchen's interpretation of the traditional Banga. Coming from a family that still practices Banga today, he offers a unique insight into a community that engages in rituals with dance, music, singing, and trance, providing a cleansing and calming effect on those present.
The Banga and the community around the music serve as a shield against the experiences of racism, mockery, and degradation they face in Tunisian society. The Banga is freedom from oppression—a place where strength is found, and where there is room to be oneself. Here, no one looks down on or excludes you. The Banga is a place where power is reclaimed for a moment, as the rituals both fascinate and frighten those outside the Banga community.
When Banga Spirits take the stage, you will feel the drums, and you will hear and sense the many voices of the Banga family, lifting you into their world for a while. Come and let yourself be carried away.
LENNYKALIMBA
Lennykalimba plays Jutlandic algorithms from around the world. He has been a presence in the underground music scene since the 2000s, working as a drummer, percussionist, producer, electronic sound artist, self-taught folk musician, and improvising krautrock, jazz, and world musician.
In recent years, he has dedicated himself to developing his own unique musical expression using homemade instruments, patience, and a sampler that fizzes and bubbles like a glass of danceable champagne for the occasion.
The music is quirky, pulsating, and captivating in its own way; a blend of acoustic and electronic music that resonates like a fusion of traditional musical styles from around the world. A warm and playful atmosphere is created when acoustic instruments are improvised over sampled beats. Step into LennyKalimba's algorithm and hear the world with different ears.
AMMAR 808
Sofyann Ben Youssef, also known as Ammar808, is the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed albums "Maghreb United" and "Global Control / Invisible Invasion," not to mention the earlier project Bargou08. Before settling in Denmark, he embarked on a unique journey that established him as the godfather of the Tunisian alternative and electronic scene.
Raised as a music scholar in the corridors of the Music Institute of Tunis, he specialized in Arabic and Indian music. As an avid listener, he strives to find bridges between Oriental and Western music. This thirst for yet unheard musical blends led him to settle in Vienna and then Brussels, where he met Anana, the vocalist and guitarist from the Tuareg band Kel Assouf. Sofyann produced their albums and joined the live band, bringing his subharmonic Moog bass to the desert blues cocktail.
He now runs his own mothership studio in Kjellerup, Denmark, where he works as a composer, producer, sound engineer, and music production teacher.
