MEROPE
"Mystery and folk flow into the ocean of modern times." This is how the Polish magazine Nowamuzyka aptly described the enchanting sounds of the Lithuanian-Belgian duo Merope. Here, audiences are drawn deep into the realm of Lithuanian folk music, where Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė's voice and kanklės (a traditional Lithuanian string instrument) intertwine old songs with modern soundscapes. Together with Belgian multi-instrumentalist Bert Cools, they create a sonic universe that spans from experimental guitar playing to beautiful electronic textures. The music feels at once sacred, mythological, and contemporary.
Merope has released four albums since 2012, with their most recent, the stunningly vibrant "Salos" (2021), recorded in collaboration with the renowned Lithuanian Jauna Muzika Choir, Jean-Christophe Bonnafous, and Shahzad Ismaily. They have just released their new album "Vėjula", which also features prominent collaborators, including Ismaily, Laraaji, and the legendary guitarist Bill Frisell. Traditional Baltic tones are transformed into something new, playful, and universal within an open sonic landscape that explores jazz, ambient, and minimalist compositions.
AYO
AYO is the solo project by Danish electronic composer and sound artist Julie Schønherr Rosengreen. She moves within the ambient genre and strives to create a timeless bubble of atmospheric, dreamy, melodic and organic sounds with a touch of melancholy that gently, but persistently, makes one's body and mind move towards a fundamental earthy connection. AYO has a deep fascination for nature and incorporates this into her live performance, regularly letting plants and water generate the sound we hear.
AYO/Julie Schønherr Rosengreen has been playing and composing music since she was a child. With a background as a violinist, and as a classical musician, the ambient genre was later a place where she felt at home. Julie is educated at the danish national academy of music, with a bachelor's degree in electronic music and sound art. Here she has honed her expression and developed her "voice" in order to be able to stand stronger with her message and vision. Julie has toured with her AYO project all over Europe since 2015, but has also played in countries such as Morocco and Nepal.
